Balsam Bagels

Balsam Bagels is a family-owned bakery at 288 Winton Road North in the North Winton Village neighborhood of Rochester, NY. Husband-and-wife team Roni and Rebecca Malek opened the shop in June 2004 with the goal of creating a welcoming space built around quality, freshly made food. More than two decades later, the bakery remains a morning fixture in the neighborhood, operating out of an open-style kitchen where customers can watch bagels being shaped and baked on site.

The menu at Balsam Bagels goes well beyond a standard bagel counter. The bakery produces more than 20 bagel varieties — among them rye, pumpernickel, sundried tomato, pesto, salt, and cinnamon raisin — all made in-house daily. Cream cheese comes in roughly 25 flavors, sourced from Lighthouse Cream Cheese in Ontario, New York. Beyond bagels, the lineup includes:

• Sandwiches, wraps, and daily panini specials
• Homemade soups and salads
• Pastries such as rugelach, hamantaschen, muffins, cinnamon rolls, and biscotti
• Stuffed phyllo pockets, quiches, and knishes
• Fresh-brewed coffee

Balsam Bagels also caters to plant-based diets with a dedicated vegan menu. Nearly all of the bagel varieties are vegan, and additional options include a Just Egg sandwich, plant-based cream cheese, and vegan soups and muffins. The bakery offers catering services and online ordering for pickup.

Balsam Bagels is known for its extensive bagel selection and its scratch-made approach — dough is mixed, shaped, and baked on the premises in full view of customers. The bakery earned a "Best Bagel" designation from City Newspaper's Best of Rochester reader poll in 2015. Its wide range of housemade cream cheese flavors and a menu that extends into pastries, soups, and hot sandwiches set it apart from a typical bagel shop.

The bakery sits on North Winton Road near Blossom Road in North Winton Village, a residential neighborhood on Rochester's east side with a cluster of small, locally owned shops and restaurants. Street parking is available along Winton Road. Hours run Tuesday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and Saturday through Sunday from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.; the shop is closed on Mondays.
