Equal Grounds Community Cafe
Community-focused coffee house on South Avenue offering coffee, tea, and events including open mic comedy and music nights.
Overview
Equal Grounds Community Cafe is a coffee house and gathering space at 750 South Avenue in Rochester's South Wedge neighborhood. The cafe opened on May 5, 2006, and has operated as a Black-owned, LGBTQ-owned establishment since its founding. Over nearly two decades on South Avenue, Equal Grounds has built a reputation as an inclusive, community-driven space that pairs its coffee program with regular cultural programming and a welcoming atmosphere.
What They Offer
Equal Grounds serves organic, fair-trade coffee and tea alongside a light food menu that includes wraps, salads, and desserts sourced in part from local bakeries. Both hot and iced drink options are available, covering everything from morning coffee to afternoon pick-ups. Beyond the menu, the cafe provides free WiFi, plenty of outlets, board games, and a gift shop. The art-adorned interior includes a side room with vaulted ceilings and flexible seating that doubles as an event space.
The cafe hosts a rotating schedule of live events. New Ground Poetry Night, a monthly open mic series that launched in late 2014, takes place on the first Tuesday of each month and regularly draws fifteen to twenty poets per session. Equal Grounds also programs live music nights and comedy open mics throughout the month.
Known For
Equal Grounds is known as one of Rochester's longest-running independently owned coffee houses with an explicitly inclusive mission. Its commitment to fair-trade and sustainably sourced beverages, combined with its role as a neighborhood cultural venue, sets it apart from larger chain cafes. The cafe has served as a platform for emerging and established poets, musicians, and comedians since the mid-2000s, functioning as much as a community center as a coffee shop.
Location & Neighborhood
The cafe sits on South Avenue in the heart of the South Wedge, a walkable neighborhood south of downtown Rochester known for its mix of independent shops, restaurants, and residential streets. South Avenue serves as the neighborhood's main commercial corridor, and Equal Grounds is within a short walk of other South Wedge staples along the avenue. Indoor seating fills the main room and the vaulted side room, while outdoor seating is available in warmer months. Hours are generally Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. and weekends from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., though visitors should confirm current hours directly with the cafe.
