Family-owned, ASL-friendly bakery and cafe crafting fresh donuts, baked goods, and soft pretzels. Open Tuesday through Saturday for breakfast and lunch.

Overview

Golden Harvest Bakery & Cafe is a family-owned, Deaf-owned bakery and cafe at 368 Jefferson Road in the Henrietta neighborhood of Rochester, NY. Owners Joel and Emily Reed relocated from Lancaster, Pennsylvania in 2017, drawn to Rochester's established Deaf community — Joel is Deaf, and the cafe operates as a fully ASL-friendly business. Golden Harvest first opened on April 12, 2019, in Scottsville, where it operated for three years before moving to its current Henrietta location in June 2022.

What They Offer

The bakery draws on Amish and Mennonite baking traditions rooted in German baking culture, with recipes passed down through multiple generations of the Reed family. Everything is made from scratch without preservatives. Core offerings include:

  • Fresh donuts, with vegan donuts available every Wednesday and Saturday
  • Soft pretzels
  • Cookies and other baked goods
  • All-day breakfast items and lunch served from 11 a.m.
  • Locally roasted coffee and specialty teas
  • Freezer meals for takeaway

A small retail section carries snacks and maple syrup. Golden Harvest also accepts wholesale orders and offers online ordering with in-store pickup.

Known For

Golden Harvest has built a reputation as a gathering place for Rochester's Deaf community, particularly given its proximity to the National Technical Institute for the Deaf at RIT. The cafe has hosted free Thanksgiving dinners for NTID students unable to travel home for the holiday, partnered with Deaf chefs for special event menus, and organized monthly religious gatherings conducted in ASL. Its from-scratch Mennonite-style baking — especially the donuts and soft pretzels — and its inclusive, sign-language-accessible environment set it apart from other bakeries in the area.

Location & Neighborhood

Golden Harvest sits on Jefferson Road in Henrietta, a commercial corridor south of Rochester near the Rochester Institute of Technology campus. The stretch of Jefferson Road around the bakery includes a mix of retail plazas and restaurants, making it an accessible stop for both neighborhood residents and RIT students. Hours have been Tuesday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Saturday, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., though visitors should confirm current hours directly with the cafe as schedules have varied.
