Hose 22 Firehouse Grill
American grill restaurant in a restored 1916 firehouse in the Charlotte neighborhood, featuring 22 beer taps, over 50 bottled beers, and an extensive wine list. Open Tuesday through Sunday.
Overview
Hose 22 Firehouse Grill is an American grill restaurant located at 56 Stutson St in Rochester's Charlotte neighborhood, housed inside a restored 1916 firehouse. The original building broke ground on April 4, 1916, and opened that October as the home of Hose Company No. 22, which combined the Baldwin Engine and Hose Company with the Charlotte Hook and Ladder Company. The firehouse served the city until 1962 and then sat vacant for decades before contractor Craig Ristuccia led an extensive renovation starting in 2007. That restoration preserved the building's brick exterior and architectural details while adding tin ceilings, refinished floors, a new slate roof, copper gutters, and a replicated wrought iron balcony.
What They Offer
The menu centers on American comfort food with a few upscale touches. Standout dishes include:
- Smoked baby back ribs, prepared fresh daily and slow-braised, served with warm apple chutney and sweet potato wedges
- Firehouse mac and cheese — a five-cheese blend with penne pasta and baked breadcrumb crust, also available buffalo-style or as a lobster-and-crab variation with white wine and asiago sauce
- Gourmet pizzas, steaks, and seafood
- Friday fish fry
The drink program features 22 beer taps, more than 50 bottled beers, and an extensive wine list. A lower-level bar called the Downtime Pub offers a separate space for drinks.
Known For
Hose 22 is known for combining a historic setting with hearty American fare. The dining rooms retain original firehouse elements — fire poles, meeting rooms, and bunk rooms that guests can explore on self-guided tours. A photo gallery dedicated to the Port of Charlotte community lines the walls alongside historical memorabilia. The building is also a stop on the Haunted History Trail of New York State, with staff reporting unexplained activity in the structure that stood empty for nearly five decades before its restoration.
Location & Neighborhood
The restaurant sits on Stutson Street in Charlotte, Rochester's lakeside neighborhood along the southern shore of Lake Ontario. The original firehouse was built adjacent to the Charlotte police station, and the surrounding area retains a small-town village feel within the city limits. Charlotte's proximity to Ontario Beach Park and the Port of Rochester makes Hose 22 a convenient stop for visitors heading to or from the lakefront. The restaurant is open Tuesday through Sunday, with hours running from 11:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. most days and until 9:00 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. The main floor and lower level are handicap accessible.
