Lento

Lento is a farm-to-table restaurant located inside Village Gate Square on North Goodman Street in Rochester's Neighborhood of the Arts. Opened in 2007, the restaurant is owned and operated by Chef Art Rogers, who was named a James Beard Award semifinalist for Best Chef in the Northeast in 2015. The name "Lento" is Italian for "slow," reflecting the restaurant's commitment to the slow food movement — everything is made from scratch, cooked fresh to order, with no microwaves or steam tables in the kitchen.

Lento's menu changes daily based on seasonal availability, featuring both full entrees and medium-sized plates built around ingredients sourced from farms in the greater Rochester area. Breads, desserts, charcuterie, and pickles are all produced in-house. Past menu offerings have included butternut squash ravioli with sage brown butter, monkfish with gulf shrimp and polenta, duck liver mousse with pickled red onions, and house-made savory granitas. The restaurant also offers oysters, with a popular Tuesday oyster special that draws regular crowds.

The beverage program features a wine list with a strong selection from the Finger Lakes region, a New York-focused beer list, and creative cocktails. Lento also provides private event hosting, catering services, and oyster catering.

Lento established its farm-to-table approach in 2007, well before the concept gained widespread traction in Upstate New York. The restaurant's identity centers on daily-changing menus driven entirely by local sourcing and from-scratch preparation. Chef Art Rogers' James Beard semifinalist recognition in 2015 brought additional attention to the restaurant's ingredient-focused cooking style and its role in Rochester's dining scene.

Lento sits inside Village Gate Square at 274 North Goodman Street in Rochester's Neighborhood of the Arts district, a walkable stretch of North Goodman known for its concentration of galleries, studios, and independent businesses. The Village Gate complex — a converted industrial building — houses a mix of shops and creative spaces alongside the restaurant. The dining room features an industrial-chic aesthetic with brick walls, exposed wood beams, and open ceilings. Lento is open for dinner Tuesday through Saturday, with reservations available through Resy.
