Mala Magic

Mala Magic is a fast-casual malatang restaurant located in the College Town district of Rochester, NY. The restaurant opened in July 2025, bringing a build-your-own simmering bowl concept to the mixed-use development near the University of Rochester campus. Malatang is a Chinese dining format in which each guest selects raw ingredients from refrigerated shelves, picks a soup base, and hands everything to the kitchen to be cooked together in a single bowl.

Diners at Mala Magic choose from six soup bases — Mala Spicy, Fish Maw Chicken, Beef Bone, Tomato, Mushroom, and Tom Yum — then fill their bowl from a selection of vegetables, proteins, and noodles. Ingredient options include:

• Vegetables and staples: broccoli, corn on the cob, lettuce, mushrooms, bamboo shoots, tofu
• Proteins: beef, lamb, fish, crab legs, quail eggs
• Noodles: udon, ramen

The restaurant is open Sunday through Thursday from 11:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. and Friday through Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.
