Mercantile on Main

food-beveragefood-hall

Rochester's first food hall and one of the largest in upstate New York, featuring seven kitchen vendors including Italian, Indian, and New Orleans-inspired cuisines, plus a coffee bar. Cashless environment with curling lanes and oversized chess boards.

Overview

Mercantile on Main is Rochester's first food hall, occupying a ground-floor space inside Sibley Square at the corner of Clinton Avenue and East Main Street in downtown Rochester, NY. The building itself is the former Sibley's Department Store, a 1.1-million-square-foot structure that opened in 1939 and was once described as the largest department store between New York and Chicago. The redevelopment of the space blends the original art deco architectural details with modern design, and visitors enter through a theater-style marquee entrance. The food hall operates as a cashless environment and offers both dine-in and takeout ordering through the Toast Takeout app.

What They Offer

The hall hosts multiple kitchen vendors serving a rotating mix of cuisines. Current vendors listed on the Mercantile's own site include Rococo Café for coffee and espresso, Frenchman Street, La Bola, Rooteins, Red Zone Pizza, and Seasons' Noodle. The vendor lineup has evolved since the hall first opened, when kitchens included Nani's Kitchen (Indian cuisine), Flour Kitchen (fresh pasta with seasonal sauces), CUT (flame-grilled proteins with grain and vegetable bowls), and Broth (pho and bone broth bowls). A cocktail bar called Rufus offers local craft beer and wine. Five of the original seven vendors were minority- or women-owned businesses.

Beyond food, Mercantile on Main features two 40-foot curling lanes and two oversized 8-foot chess and checkerboard sets along one side of the hall. The venue also includes arcade-style games such as darts and pool. A dedicated event space called The Duke hosts live music, corporate gatherings, weddings, and fundraisers, while the Clocktower Gallery displays rotating exhibitions.

Known For

Mercantile on Main holds a distinct place in Rochester's dining landscape as the city's first food hall and one of the largest in upstate New York. Interior murals curated by Rochester artist Shawn Dunwoody add a local artistic dimension to the space. The hall regularly programs Thursday evening live music during spring and summer months, along with trivia nights, making it a social gathering spot as much as a place to eat.

Location & Neighborhood

The food hall sits at 240 East Main Street in downtown Rochester, at the intersection of Clinton Avenue and Main Street inside Sibley Square. Validated parking is available at the Mortimer Street and St. Joseph's parking garages nearby, with additional street parking in the area. Sibley Square itself is part of a larger mixed-use redevelopment that also houses The Commissary, a food business incubator, and a DGX grocery store. The downtown location places Mercantile on Main within walking distance of the Rochester Riverside Convention Center and the Main Street commercial corridor.
