Redd Wood

food-beveragewine-bar

Contemporary restaurant and wine bar led by chef Richard Reddington, located in the former home of Grinnell's on Monroe Avenue. Open Tuesday through Saturday for dinner.

Overview

Redd Wood is a contemporary restaurant and wine bar at 1690 Monroe Avenue in Rochester's Brighton neighborhood. Opened in March 2024, it occupies the building that formerly housed Grinnell's, a family-run restaurant that operated for 62 years before closing in 2023. The venture is a partnership between chef Richard Reddington, a Pittsford native who previously ran the Michelin-starred Redd in Napa Valley, and Marty O'Sullivan, operator of the Marty's Meats food truck fleet. Executive chef Brad Pareira, who worked alongside Reddington for over a decade in California, relocated to Rochester to lead the kitchen.

What They Offer

Redd Wood centers its cooking on an open hearth, with French and Italian influences shaping a dinner-only menu. Dishes lean toward seasonal preparations rather than straightforward steakhouse fare — expect items like pissaladière, sweetbreads, and a raw bar alongside heartier options such as prime ribeye and steak frites. The restaurant also operates a tableside cocktail program and maintains an Old World-focused wine list overseen by sommelier Ian Críticos. Dinner is served Tuesday through Thursday from 5 to 9 p.m., Friday and Saturday until 10 p.m., and Sunday from 5 to 8:30 p.m. The restaurant is closed Mondays. Private dining is available for parties of ten or more, and reservations open one month in advance.

Known For

Redd Wood is built around live-fire cooking techniques drawn from Reddington's training at notable kitchens in France, including Arpège in Paris and Le Moulin de Mougins in Provence. The dining room doubles as a gallery of sorts, with original contemporary artwork curated by Ronnen Fine Art displayed throughout the space. The interior was redesigned by California-based Erin Martin Design, transforming the former Grinnell's layout into an open-kitchen concept with a glassed-in cooking area.

Location & Neighborhood

Situated on Monroe Avenue in Brighton, Redd Wood sits along one of Rochester's busiest commercial corridors, surrounded by shops, cafes, and neighborhood businesses stretching from the Twelve Corners intersection toward the city line. Valet parking is available for diners. The Monroe Avenue stretch through Brighton carries a walkable, independent-retail character that distinguishes it from the region's suburban shopping plazas.
