Hopeman Carillon Summer Concert: Michael Gancz — August 10

Michael Gancz closes the 2026 series with a program he calls "look up" — Oscar Peterson, Dvořák's "New World" Symphony, and a full carillon arrangement of Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe." Gancz, a carillonist and Ph.D. researcher at Stanford, writes that in a world bent on turning communities into consumers, the carillon asks us to do exactly that: stop, and look up.

The Hopeman Memorial Carillon is fifty bells weighing more than three tons, played live from a cabin roughly 186 feet up inside the Rush Rhees tower. Nothing about it is automated. Everything you hear on the quad below travels from one person's hands and feet through bronze. Bring a blanket, bring a picnic, and let the whole campus turn into a concert hall with no walls.
