Blackfriars Theatre follows up its Fringe season opener with something sharp and funny: Men on Boats by Jacklyn Backhaus, a play that turns an 1869 expedition into a full-on sendup of masculinity and Manifest Destiny. The twist — the historically all-white, all-male expedition is performed by not-white, not-cis-male actors. If you loved what Hamilton did with history, this is in the same spirit: taking a very serious moment and making it newly strange and illuminating. Director Rachel Solomon leads the production.
