The Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra opens its Piano Festival this Thursday night with one of the most thrilling matchups in classical music: Olga Kern takes on Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No. 3 — a piece so demanding it has been called the Everest of the piano repertoire. Music Director Andreas Delfs leads the program, which frames Kern's performance with Rachmaninov's haunting tone poem, Isle of the Dead. This is the first of five Piano Festival concerts, each featuring a different world-class soloist.
