The Rochester Public Market is celebrating its 112th birthday this year with an $8 million renovation.
“By uplifting the market, we believe we’ll be uplifting the entire neighborhood and the city of Rochester,” Mayor Lovely Warren said.
The Democrat and Chronicle reports that the new renovation and expansion project will include a 13,000-square-foot indoor shed and a new outdoor shed that will be able to hold up to 48 more vendors.
“For 100 years this has been a meeting place and an eating place,” Lt. Gov Kathy Hochul said.
The Public Market’s next food truck rodeo is on June 29; the last one was on May 25. In June, when the most ice cream in the U.S. is produced, the Bento Box food truck can expect to have long lines full of excited children waiting to try the new banana bomb.
The renovation project was supposed to begin last year, but the bids were $2 million more than the city’s estimate. The city found a suitable contractor once they reopened bids in January.
The Public Market will be open throughout the construction of the project and will feature more restrooms, a new logo, new sheds, and four new food stands.
Warren spoke about the new shed and the impact it will have on the Public Market. “This shed will be energy-efficient and more in harmony with the architectural and historic nature of the market.”
According to 13 WHAM, there are currently 36 licensed food trucks this year and several others on the waiting list. At last year’s peak, there were a total of 46 licensed food trucks; two years ago, there were only 12.
Along with the Empire State Development, the New York State Agriculture Department is pitching in $2 million for renovations. The rest of the money comes from public funds.
