Although 2022 hasn’t started with quite the bang that many of us hoped, there is still a lot of time for the year to bring us positive changes that will improve our lives and make us feel better about the future.

Some changes are already in motion, such as the draft legislation introduced in 2021 by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer to change the law regarding marijuana. Others are still being thought up and will come into reality as the year progresses.

We’ll be looking at four of the changes those who live in New York can expect during 2022 and onward, and why they matter.

Older Folk to Outnumber the Youth

The youth in New York (and the rest of America) are expected to soon be outnumbered by the older generation. According to predictions, we can expect to see the 85-year and older population triple by the year 2040. It will stand at 14.1 million, a massive spike from the 5.7 million it stood at in 2011.

This will be the first time in American history that older adults will outnumber kids. It is possible that as a result, a lot of craftsmanship jobs could be open due to a lack of knowledge, experience, and skill if the younger generation isn’t interested in pursuing those careers.

More Divorces on The Horizon

Americans are less likely to tie the knot than they used to be — likely thanks to issues like debt, job security, and climate change weighing heavily on young minds. The rate of marriage is going down faster than the rate of divorces. And yet, despite fewer people getting married, experts are predicting that 40% to 50% of them will still get divorced.

Things were already looking grim in 2018 when marriage rates hit an all-time low: only 6.5 weddings per 1,000 people. As matters stand now, marriage doesn’t seem to be a priority for young people. Whether they just don’t want to spend the money on weddings or are afraid of getting divorced isn’t clear.

Positive Changes for the City of Rochester

It’s not all doom and gloom in 2022, fortunately. The city of Rochester is showing that good things can still happen in the State of New York. There are many great projects in the works, many of them to benefit citizens over time.

The Art Walk Extension Enhancement project will see aging sideways and streets replaced with something a bit more artistic and aesthetically pleasing. The Aqueduct Reimagined and Riverfront Promenades project is about creating a central gathering place for citizens and visitors as well as riverfront connectivity.

New York Skyline Changes

There are many ambitious changes planned for the skyline of New York, and most of them are pretty exciting. It is expected that JP Morgan Chase’s new Midtown East headquarters will go up this year. The opening is only going to take place in 2024 though.

David Adjaye’s residential tower in New York is an 800-foot condo tower with rather expensive rentals that will look different from the glass towers so many associates with the city. The renovation of David Geffen Hall will be finished ahead of schedule and the opening is believed to take place in the fall of 2022 — a full two years early!

2022 – A Year of Change for New York

There you have it — four big changes that will impact New York as this year progresses. Not all changes are positive, but at least there are silver linings to look forward to. Of course, the four changes mentioned here are but the tip of the iceberg; there is a lot more to expect this year!
