In Rochester, although new car sales have steadily declined, there is still plenty of optimism regarding the automobile industry.

Rochester Automobile Dealers’ Association Inc. reported that Rochester’s August numbers were down roughly six percent from 2015 August numbers. During this past August, car dealers sold just 4,479 new cars.

The Rochester Business Journal reports that after a record-breaking 2015 of new car sales in the Rochester area, car sales are behind three percent from last year so far.

Despite a rough month for Rochester new car dealers, the country as a whole is still doing better than ever. With only three months left in 2016, new car vehicle sales have increased again for an amazing sixth consecutive year. People are buying new cars more than ever before as well, with a total new car sale for 2016 at 17.5 million, which is a record for the country.

According to Money, a main reason for this uptick in consumer purchases is due to the high levels of new vehicle discounts.

Car dealers are attempting to increase sales over the next few months and plan on doing so by incentivizing potential buyers. For September, the average incentive is at $3,923 per unit, which is a record high. The last time incentives were up to these levels, though, was back in December 2008, right before the Great Recession truly began. At the time, before the recession, the peak was $3,753 per unit. That was when dealers were increasingly desperate to sell vehicles and make a profit.

Industry officials, however, aren’t as worried this time around.

“In absolute terms, the industry is performing at an exceptional level,” said Deirdre Borrego, senior vice president at J.D. Power. “While sales have fallen slightly, they are at near-record levels and transaction prices are at all-time highs.”
