The average real estate transaction involves 86 people from start to finish. It’s not everyday, however, that a real estate transaction involves a national audience and a large network TV budget. As an industry, interior design generates $10 billion in revenue every year. That’s no surprise given the ever-growing popularity of HGTV shows like “Property Brothers,” “Flip Or Flop,” and “Fixer Upper.” But there’s one show to rule them all, and it’s the one countless couples love to hate-watch: “House Hunters.” Fortunately for Rochester fans of the reality TV series, the Flower City has once again been featured in a recent episode.
Mandy Friend Gigliotti works as a realtor herself and has been featured on ‘House Hunters’ episodes in the past, helping residents find their forever home. But this time, she’s on the other side. She and her husband Ed, a chiropractor with a practice in Brighton, needed a new home for their growing family. They could have very easily gone the conventional route, but instead, they decided to audition for the show.
Mandy told WROC-TV, “The auditioning process is pretty lengthy. You have to go through phone conversations, you have to do a video application,” she explained. “With Abbey [Mandy’s sister] being involved, you have to have a realtor application.”
That’s right, Mandy’s sister is a realtor, as well. Abbey served as their agent on the episode, making it a real family affair. Still, it wasn’t easy for the couple to find a property they both loved. Mandy had a starter home in mind, but Ed had his eye on a forever home. But they both agreed that they wanted something a bit unconventional.
“We really just wanted something that wasn’t cookie cutter,” Mandy explained in a TV interview. “So when Although the couple initially had Brighton, the city, or Canandaigua in mind, they ended up choosing a four-bedroom home in Perinton situated on a six-acre plot of land. The family held a viewing party at the Midtown Athletic Club when their episode aired last month.
The Gigliottis are not the only Rochester couple to have been featured on the popular series. Last year, Jeffery Diduch and Biff Boswell found their Perinton dream home with help from another Keller Williams agent and the HGTV crew. When the couple had to relocate from Tennessee, they moved into a picture-perfect, 3,800-square-foot contemporary house (with an open floor plan, of course) that sits on a five-acre lot and cost them a cool $500,000. While that sounds a bit steep for Monroe County, the couple pointed out to the Democrat and Chronicle in a one-year-later profile piece that they got a lot for their money; everything was updated when they moved in. Even a minor kitchen remodel has an average ROI of 82.7%, but the only changes Diduch and Boswell made were purely cosmetic, like new wall colors and decorating with pieces made by local artists.
Although a single optical fiber can carry 90,000 TV channels, real estate fans will be glad to know that “House Hunters” airs new episodes on HGTV, weeknights at 10PM.
