For the past five years, Rochester’s annual Party in the Park summer concert series has brought names like these to downtown’s Riverside Festival Site. It’s been fun, but Riverside — which is located at the corner of Exchange Boulevard and Court Street — is essentially just an empty parking lot with a few food vendors scattered around in covered stands. With thousands of local music lovers in attendance, it’s a party all right, though it’s not exactly the kinds of scene you’d imagine when you hear the word “park.”
But come summer 2014, that’s all about to change.
Mayor Lovely Warren announced last week that the Party in the Park festival is moving. This year, all the shows will be held at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Park at Manhattan Square — yes, an actual park.
“We’re taking it back to its roots,” the mayor said at a press conference on February 13. “Party in the Park is going back to the park.”
The festival is moving back to its original site at Manhattan Square, where it first began in 1997. Party in the Park moved twice, first in 2004 to the High Falls Festival Site, then again in 2008 to Riverside, because of increased attendance due to its popularity. Now, Warren said, it’s moving back home because the Rochester people have demanded it.
The new site boasts food trucks, local artists and other activities to enjoy throughout the duration of the show. Additionally, the stage itself will be set up on the grass of the park instead of in its concrete bowl. This will allow concertgoers to bring blankets and sprawl out on the lawn while enjoying the tunes.
The MLK park promises to be a nice place to get out of the sun, too, with plenty of shade from surrounding trees. But any fun in the sun can quickly turn sour, so don’t forget to bring sunscreen and — even more importantly — sunglasses, especially the kind with polarized lenses to help fight off vertical glares. After all, you don’t want anything to kill your concert vibe when you’re partying in the park.
So far, this year’s festival performers haven’t been announced yet. But the full lineup is expected to be announced sometime around early May. The concerts themselves begin on June 19 and run every Thursday until August 14.
This summer, when you’re preparing for a night out indulging in live music, you can say to your friends “See you in the park!” — and actually mean it this time.
