The City of Rochester’s Deputy Mayor, Leonard Redon, recently announced he will be stepping down from his position at the end of May in order to focus on his health and family. Redon, who has served as deputy since 2011 under two different mayors, was diagnosed with cancer last year.
“It’s time for me to go take care of me,” Redon told the Democrat and Chronicle. “My energy level is not the same, so I don’t think I’m contributing the way I have in the past.”
Redon, 64, worked for both Kodak and Paychex before assuming a public service position. As Deputy Mayor, he was an instrumental player behind the city’s red light camera installation program and city government operations management. He has also served on the New York State Board of Regents for close to 20 years.
Mayor Lovely Warren issued a statement on Redon’s departure, saying, “I was initially very sad to learn of Deputy Mayor Redon’s decision to retire but was glad he will continue assisting our city on some important special projects going forward. Len has been an invaluable part of my team, he has been a stalwart supporter of our city and he has become a good friend. I will miss working with him on a daily basis, I am grateful for his service and I wish him and his family Godspeed in what I know will be a successful fight against cancer.”
Redon’s form of cancer has not been disclosed, though his public announcement comes quickly on the heels of news of Monroe County District Attorney Sandra Doorley’s multiple myeloma cancer diagnosis. Over the past eight years, rates of brain tumors with unknown causes have also increased by 30% nationwide.
The City of Rochester has announced Carlos Carballada as Redon’s successor. Carballada is the former President of First National Bank and Central Trust Company as well as Director at M&T Bank. More recently, he served as Commissioner of City Economic Development.
“I am excited for Carlos Carballada to join my team at City Hall and to have the opportunity to once again work with this dynamic, professional, and community-minded leader,” Mayor Warren said. Carballada will take over for Redon in June.
