This week Governor Cuomo gave Rochester, among other cities in New York, permission to begin or continue red light programs until 2019. Red light cameras are one of the things many drivers love to hate in Rochester. Cities all over the country are renewing their commitments to their programs, in spite of controversy over the costs and benefits.
So does this mean those red light cameras are here for good in Rochester? Not necessarily. Those cities given approval aren’t required to create or continue red light camera programs; they just now are allowed to do so if they wish. And the City of Rochester is still trying to determine if the program here is having a positive impact on traffic safety.
I reported earlier this summer that the City of Rochester is conducting a study to determine the impact the cameras have on traffic safety. Results were originally expected in July, but the report date has been pushed to August now. This green light (sorry…. I had to) from Cuomo means that it can continue the program while it takes a good look at the accident data where red light cameras are currently placed to determine what is best for the public safety of all who traverse our city streets.
