On Friday the New York State Police released the name of the man killed in an accident in the Western New York town of Arcadia.
James E. Savolainen of Lyons, NY was killed Wednesday when his 1978 Chevrolet sedan collided with a garbage truck. The accident occurred at about 10:30AM on Route 88 (also known as Fairville Station Road).
The garbage truck, owned by D.L. Parkison Enterprises, was traveling west and slowing down to pick up a residential can at the time of the accident. Neither of the two people in the truck were injured.
According to witnesses, the truck’s driver attempted to pull Savolainen from the wreckage, but the car quickly caught on fire.
Road workers were doing construction approximately a mile from the scene. According to them, the car’s driver slowed down while passing by the road work zone, then sped up before the collision occurred.
A press release from the state police stated on Oct. 22 that the driver of the Chevrolet had been pronounced dead at the scene, but that the police would not release his identity until after the family had been notified.
Savolainen was 45 years old. This is often considered to be in the safest age range for driving — the crash rate for teens is nearly nine times what it is for middle-aged drivers, according to Consumer Reports, which is why drivers between the ages of 16 and 25 have higher insurance rates.
Wayne County Coroner Dr. David Hannon said it appeared that Savolainen was trying to brake, causing the car to spin. The front of the garbage truck collided with the car’s passenger side. A later police report said that the car had crossed the road’s center line.
The Wayne County Sheriff’s Department, Fairville Fire, Rescue and Ambulance, Newark Fire Department, and Newark Volunteer Ambulance also responded to the scene of the accident.
According to police, the cause of the accident is still under investigation.
