If you have been following us for a while, you know that Project Scion is one of our favorite projects in this city. They turn vacant and unused lots into community green space. Project Scion’s flagship project, The Orchard, made a huge impact on the JOSANA neighborhood in 2012. The City of Rochester recognized the project last year and awarded The Orchard Best Community Enhancement Garden.

Seeking to revitalize neighborhoods through gardens and art. Convert a large vacant inner-city lot to resident inclusive green space.

This year’s project, The Gateway, is in the Edgerton Neighborhood. The Gateway will be at Dewey and Ravine Avenues. Although this year’s project already has support from The City of Rochester, Mary’s Place, the Edgerton and Maplewood Neighborhood Associations and others, it still needs some community fundraising help.

The Project Scion model is one of continued neighborhood and community involvement, so that these new gardens are actually important parts of the neighborhoods they are in long after the installation of the garden is complete. Please consider volunteering or contributing to this year’s project if you are able. Projects like Project Scion are making a huge difference for the daily lives of the people in our city’s communities.
