The weather is finally nice out and COVID-19 restrictions are loosening. That means it’s time to find some fun things to do with your kids!

If you’re looking for some fun places around Rochester to take your kids, you’ve arrived at the right place. From day trips to the beach to site-seeing around downtown, there are so many fun things to do in this great city!

Here are some family and kid-friendly fun things to do around Rochester now that it’s warm out:

Do some yoga in the park

There are so many amazing parks around the Rochester area and these places are great for relaxation, family fun, and yoga.

About 36 million Americans practice yoga. If you don’t know what you’re doing, that’s okay! There are so many apps, online resources, and experienced people online you can get in contact with to help you and your kids learn how to successfully do yoga.

Obviously, you need to start with simple yoga stretches — especially when teaching your children. Instruct your kids to slowly do all kinds of stretches and focus on their breathing. It might seem tough at first, but this will actually be a lot of fun! Plus, you and your kids will be able to enjoy all the health benefits of learning yoga.

Head to a public pool

There are a few public swimming areas around Rochester, as well. When the temperature gets close to triple digits, swimming can be the only thing that actually feels good. Plus, it’s an extremely fun activity to do with your kids!

Swimming is the fourth most-popular sport or activity in the U.S. according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Make sure your little ones actually know how to swim before diving in, though. If not, you can find plenty of floaties that can help them stay afloat or you can just guide them across the water, as well.

Spend a day at Hamlin Beach State Park

There is nothing more fun for kids than playing around at the beach! Building sandcastles, searching for seashells, and playing in the water can be fun for hours. Though you don’t need too much to have fun at the beach since it’s filled with entertainment on its own, but you are going to need a few things to make sure there are no issues throughout the day.

Make sure you are bringing plenty of sunscreen for those extra hot days, bug spray to keep those annoying pests away, some healthy snacks, water, and toys. You don’t have to overdo it with beach toys, however. Far too many people end up packing huge totes full of toys only to leave 90% of them in the bag. Giving a kid a small shovel, a few different size beach pales, and some extra accessories are all they need to have a great time!

Take a walk around downtown

Downtown Rochester is home to so many beautiful buildings and breathtaking structures. Do a little research beforehand and you’ll be able to teach your kids all about the history of Rochester and what each building, bridge, and structure actually is.

Most concrete structures can last for more than 100 years. Here are some of the coolest buildings to check out in Rochester:

  • Central Library of Rochester and Monroe County
  • Saint Michael’s Church
  • Warner Castle
  • City Hall
  • Times Square Building
  • The Academy Building
  • The Powers Building

Rent some kayaks

One of the most fun family activities that families often overlook, kayaking can be as fun as it is relaxing. Depending on the age of your children, you might have to go for a tandem kayak or one that can comfortably fit your kid in the seat with you.

The Genesee River, Black Creek Park, or Conesus Lake are excellent options for a kayaking day trip with your kids — all just a short drive away from anywhere in the city. Similar to going to the beach, make sure to pack plenty of sunscreen, bug spray, and drinks and snacks!

Too many people waste their summers away by staying inside and watching TV with their kids. Not only is that boring, but it’s also actually pretty unhealthy. Instead, take some time to do a little more research, talk to your kids about what they’d like to do, and then get outside and have some fun in this awesome city!
