Rochester, NY
Maggie Brooks was a long time television personality in Rochester NY on NBC channel 10. Then, she leveraged her news career to begin a political career as a republican in county politics. Maggie Brooks currently serves as County Executive.
Before this position she served in the Monroe County Legislature. She was then appointed to the position of Monroe County Clerk by then Governor George Pataki. From there she ran for Monroe County Executive, defeating Bill Johnson in 2003.
We are new to Rochester, having just returned to the area after being away for 20 years. So our direct knowledge of Maggie Brooks is limited to recent events. But so far what we have seen is that she was terribly disruptive in the Ren Square project, essentially killing it publicly without consensus from the Mayor. This is particularly disheartening in light of the constant commercials Maggie Brooks runs for her economic development focus during Buffalo Bills games.
If she believes in economic development so much, why kill our only serious hope at rebuilding downtown Rochester at the 11th hour?
I find it deeply contradictory that Maggie Brooks runs ads in every Buffalo Bills game touting her economic focus (and that of the republicans) while she worked to destroy our recent hopes of a downtown Rochester revitalization project. I'm sure she has her reasons, but it easy to throw stones and very hard to get things done. With Federal funding no less. Where is Maggie's plan for downtown Rochester? Is there one? Does she understand that a thriving downtown is absolutely essential to reversing our declining Rochester NY population?
The other research I have done shows some fairly conservative initiatives for Maggie Brooks, including this business with the Rochester library system and some openly anti-gay legal action. I thought even the republicans had realized that acceptance of gay rights was a modern politcial requirement.
In short, my initial opinion of Maggie Brooks in Rochester NY is not positive. Regardless of where you land on gay rights or public libraries, it seems that every Rochesterian can agree that the downtown has become blighted and is in need of immediate revitalization. Without serious attention and funding from both the city and the county, we are well on our path to becoming Detroit or Toledo.
