ben-ross-dead-end-flyerMaking city streets safer and better for all who traverse them is, as you know, one of my favorite topics. Our streets need to allow pedestrians, cyclists, mass transit riders, drivers, those in wheelchairs, etc. to coexist and mingle. Rochester’s complete streets ordinance was a huge step forward in the way we think about our city streets. And we have a lot of great organizations and smart people putting time and effort into helping our city streets become happier places.

Last January, many of you attended a talk given by renowned city planner and author of “Walkable City: How Downtown Can Save America, One Step at a Time” — Jeff Speck. And we are lucky to have another great street visionary coming to Rochester.

Reconnect Rochester will host a discussion with author, environmental scientist and transit advocate Benjamin Ross on September 29th. I just downloaded his book “Dead End: Suburban Sprawl and the Rebirth of American Urbanism,” and have already learned a ton about the history of suburbs and how we sprawled where we are today — from Llewellyn Park and Brook Farm, to trolley car neighborhoods and beyond. I am frantically reading so I won’t be that person in book club who hasn’t finished reading the book and has to plug her ears so no one ruins the ending (hypothetically speaking, of course).

The FREE discussion will be at the Public Library on Monroe Ave beginning at 6:30PM. You can buy the book there or get it ahead of time like I did. There will be a casual conversation with Mr. Ross across the street at Aladdin’s after the discussion. There will be FREE munchies.

Did I mention the discussion is FREE? Whoo hoo! Learn stuff for free!
