Coming to Rochester is a new electric vehicle charging station, which will be located in the town of Brighton. Tri City Rentals, which owns the Rustic Village apartments next to where the car charging station will be located, unveiled the station with a ribbon cutting event last month.

The electric charging station is in keeping with an expected growth in demand for the service over the next several years. According to TWCNews, Rochester is leading the way in NY when it comes to providing this environmentally-friendly option to consumers.

“Recently there was a local grant that was given out and I believe there were somewhere between forty and fifty stations in the Rochester area,” said John Doran, who owns PlugIn Stations. “Rochester is really at the forefront of charging in New York State. Outside of New York City, I believe Rochester has more stations than any other city in New York State.”

What do locals think of the addition? “It’s great that Rochester is gradually becoming less dependent on fossil fuels and that the city is accommodating people who choose to drive electric cars,” said Samantha Berkhead, who lives in Greece, a suburb of Rochester. “I think this trend will definitely continue as more people realize the impact that their vehicle choice has on global climate change and the environment as a whole.”

Both electric and hybrid cars have been increasingly popular options for car buyers who want vehicles that are not only environmentally friendly, but also cost them less at the pump. In 2013, the total sales of electric vehicles — at 96,000 — were almost double that of 2012. Hybrid car sales have been steadily increasing over the past few years as well, and can be powered by either gasoline or electric charging stations.

The current installation is being brought to Rochester thanks to a joint effort between federal and state grant programs, and the state Energy Research and Development Agency.
