With great intentions, and likely a strong potential market, a new business has been launched in Rochester that helps people reduce their carbon footprint. It’s called Roc Pedal Power and it is a bicycle delivery service that includes a grocery delivery component.

That’s cool. This allows folks who would like to ride their bikes to the grocery store to do so and then have the goods delivered…also by bike.

Rochester is so ready for this. A lot of work has been done by hobbyists, committed hardcores, and the city government to develop, encourage, and enhance bike riding in the community but carrying your groceries home has always been an impediment to a very natural riding opportunity. Roc Pedal Power is a solution, and no cars are involved.

The service is bookable by phone or on the web and delivery people will also be available at several sites on specific days.

The new company is run by Jessica Stadt and is based on a successful enterprise in Portland. Presently, there are six delivery people engaged and the interest and support form biking enthusiasts suggest there won’t be any shortage of available bikers.

The business already has an established commercial component delivering documents downtown for businesses and law firms. Roc Pedal Power offers prescription pick ups and is reaching out to other green-anchored businesses such as Sassafras Flowers and Sweet Pea Diapers!

The bikes feature a weatherproof container able to carry 200lbs. That is a good week’s-worth of groceries!

At present, delivery people will be at the East Avenue Wegmans on Saturdays and Sundays, the South Wedge Farmers Market and Brighton Farmers Market during regular hours.

But the service is not limited to these locations. You can book a delivery from virtually any food purveyor, including Balsam Bagels and Pittsford Farms Dairy.

This is a great addition to the city. It enables more people to ride their bikes to do their shopping and promotes a green business. The fee is around $10 so it won’t break the bank either.
