Tycresha Robinson, a 22-year-old Rochester, NY woman, is accused of killing 26-year-old bicyclist Jonathan Rivera after hitting him with her vehicle. She is also charged with fleeing the scene and trying to cover up the incident.

“I remember when we were little, I was bad but he would always be there for me,” said Pedro Rivera, the victim’s brother. “He’s a good person, and I miss him right now.”

According to court documents, Robinson was passing another car when she hit Rivera. The court papers reveal that Robinson admitted that she fled the scene, despite being fully aware that she’d hit someone.

After the incident, she went to a friend’s place to hide her damaged vehicle in the back yard. Robinson told the friend that she planned on getting the vehicle fixed because she’d hit something, but then removed car’s registration sticker and license plate.

Robinson said that she didn’t report the incident because she’d been drinking beforehand.

Sadly, these types of cases are all too common. Each year, about three million people in the U.S. are injured due to car accidents, and another 34,310 are killed. This means that car accidents hurt 8,219 people and kill another 94 people every single day. Unfortunately, many of these accidents involve bicyclists. According to the latest data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 726 bicyclists were killed in crashes with motor vehicles in 2012. The NHTSA also reported that hit and runs have been on the rise since 2009.

Nine years ago, Rivera moved to Rochester from Puerto Rico. He worked as both a tattoo artist and a hair stylist in order to support his family.

“He was a strong, good man,” said Ricardo Pena, a cousin of the victim. “He didn’t mess with anybody. He kept to himself, and he loved his kid… he loved his kid so much.”
