Roughly 42% of all moves are due to personal matters, 40% are related to work, and 18% are because of government or military relocations. In the world of professional athletes, however, players move all the time and even entire franchises are at risk for relocation if the owners aren’t happy.

According to The Buffalo News, the Buffalo Sabres are considering moving their minor-league affiliate, the Rochester Americans (Amerks), out of Rochester.

“Pegula Sports and Entertainment (PSE) has been engaged in discussions with the hopes of reaching a long-term agreement for the Rochester Americans to compete in an improved facility that meets necessary arena standards,” said PSE officials.

The Amerks, the fourth-oldest franchise in the American Hockey League (AHL), have played in Rochester’s Blue Cross Arena at the Community War Memorial since 1956, when the team was founded.

The Sabres have stated for years that the Blue Cross Arena is unsuitable for its needs. The Blue Cross Arena invited the Sabres to play a preseason game in Rochester before the start of this year’s NHL season, but the Sabres declined and instead chose to play on Penn State’s campus.

Sabre Noise reports that there has been recent speculation as to where the Amerks might potentially move to: Buffalo, New York and play alongside their NHL-affiliate, or State College, Pennsylvania, where Pegula Ice Arena is located.

Despite the recent rumors and controversy surrounding the Sabres, Amerks, and Pegulas, the Democrat and Chronicle reports that Amerks ownership says that the speculation to move is “100% wrong.”

“We’re not planning on going anywhere,” said Russ Brandon, managing partner and president of PSE. “I can tell you this unequivocally that I have no walked into one other building. Our plan is to become part of the solution. Really, I think that building (Blue Cross Arena) has potential to be a beacon for the downtown development.”

Lease negotiations with the Amerks are expected to being once the current season ends on April 16.
